Minnesota conference September 2013

2/24/2013

Hi everyone,

Terri is hard at work on organizing this year’s conference in Minnesota begin Septemeber, but would like some member input.

Would you prefer:

a)      A short drive (or no drive) from the airport for most of the Conference and then a 2 hour drive to see horses on Sunday (probably the hotel will be more expensive too)

b)      A long drive (2 hours) from airport to the hotel where the Conference is and then a short drive (10 minutes or so) to see horses on Sunday.  This would be a local hotel, so will probably be cheaper.

Let us know your preference as Terri will be finalizing details soon. More info will be in renewal and member packets which will be sent out in the next week or so.

Members who have already renewed will get two of these emails, as you are also on last year’s email list.  Sorry!

Please reply to Cathy Leddy at [email protected]

We have approximately 1000 purebred and partbred Akhal-Tekes in North America, many competing in a wide variety of sports. There is public awareness of the breed like never before, with several national magazine articles published in 2012, a breed information program on national television and more and more people choosing to buy an Akhal-Teke or Akhal-Teke cross. There are breed performance awards, breeder websites and lots and lots of gorgeous pictures by talented photographers, and now there is a unified place for breeders, owners and enthusiasts to gather, to give and get information, to register horses and to build the future of the Akhal-Teke in North America.

The Akhal-Teke Association of America was formed in 1982 by Phil Case, the first to import purebreds into North America, and has been maintained in continuous operation since then, including maintenance of the registry.  Our goal is to continue developing a durable organization that will accommodate the growing numbers involved in the Akhal-Teke breed, with a focus on providing professional support for members and maintaining an inclusive environment.  We serve breeders and owners of purebreds and partbreds, as well as those who are simply in love with the Akhal-Teke.

There is more detailed information about membership levels on the new website -- www.akhal-teke.org -- as well as an on-line membership application.

So seize the moment - you can now register on-line at www.akhal-teke.org using PayPal, or simply complete the enclosed paper registration form and send with payment to:

Endurance 101: a gentle guide to the sport of long-distance riding

12/6/2012

Hi everyone. I am really excited to tell you about my latest endeavor - as a publisher! Endurance 101 is a new book specifically written for those embarking on the sport of endurance riding for the first time. Aarene Storms, the author, is an experienced Pacific Northwest rider and fellow horse blogger. We had a "real" publisher interested but it was going too slowly (bloggers are NOT that patient) and so we took matters into our own hands.

Because I was the photographer (and illustrator) for the book, there are quite a few Tekes in it, especially Danny (Magdan) and Galen of Cascade Gold, but others too, including Patrikhan, and partbreds Savannah and Alpowa.

We are offering a special discount through November 20th on the digital edition ($2.00 off the $9.99 list) if you sign up via the release list button on the web site.

www.endurance-101.com

It is also available on amazon.com in the Kindle version, but the ePub version is nicer (little finicky things like the captions staying with the photo) and we don't give most of the proceeds away to Amazon. If you don't have a reader or a tablet, you can read it on a computer with Adobe Digital Editions or any other desktop e-reader.

This is the book that experienced endurance riders want their friends who think they are crazy to read. It breaks all the complicated parts of preparing for a ride down into manageable portions, and points people at more in-depth information if they are research-inclined.

Sales of the e-book are helping to underwrite the print edition. There is a complete index and lots of links in the ebook, so it is a great reference, but I want to have that moment when I see a well-read copy of Endurance 101 lying in the front of someone's pickup at a ride!

So feel free to share the link to the deal with anyone you think might be interested, and if you do buy the book, please let me know how many Tekes you spot! I havent' had time to count them.

Christmas Greetings from Hawaii!!!!

There now is an Akhal-Teke mare living in Hawaii!!!
Here is her new owner's story:
I bought a mare called Malika. She was originally from Cascade Gold Akhal-Teke's. She is 93% Akhal-Teke from Astrachan and Mirija. I guess her mom had 1/8 other breed in her. She then went to Idaho and made it out to the Big Island in Hawaii where I live. Her owner moved back to Idaho and didn't  take her. I actually found her on craigslist! We made a connection the 2nd time I went to see her and we are really bonding. She is a real sweetheart, loves people and attention. She is a bay and has that beautiful metallic sheen and smooth gaits. This is my 1st experience with this breed. I had never actually seen one in person before! I am learning tons. She is so different from my little rodeo cutter horse!

Aloha, Michelle

Farm Parade in Friday Harbor WA

Sweet Water Farm Akhal-Teke took 4 pure bred AT's to their local Farm parade in Friday Harbor, WA.
It is a charming small town parade  with goats, turkeys and chickens..and all kinds of tractors, all making their own sounds and squeaks.
But the horses stayed calm and collected, even down main street with lots of spectators.
One of our students handed out AT brochures to those who seemed interested.

Glimpses of the MN horse expo 2012 from riding disciplines to almost every breed. Grand display of everything horsey from art to vet supplies, clothing to dude ranches. A place where the people and the horses walk together in the streets.
